Getting started checklist

You must be registered with us if you import and/or manufacture* relevant industrial chemicals, or certain products that contain relevant industrial chemicals, for commercial purposes.

*Unless the subsequent supply of the manufactured chemical is confined to within the Australian State where the manufacture occurs.

Your legal obligations under the Industrial Chemicals (Notification and Assessment) Act 1989 (ICNA Act) apply regardless of the amount of industrial chemicals that you import and/or manufacture.

The legal requirement to register your business does not relate to the toxicity or hazardous nature of the industrial chemicals you import and/or manufacture, and is separate to your obligations regarding the notification and assessment of individual chemicals.

You may also need to have a chemical assessed by NICNAS before you import or manufacture it. Read more about how to notify a new chemical.
