Nanomaterials that are 'existing chemicals'

Many industrial nanomaterials in international commerce have conventional forms which are on the Australian Inventory of Chemical Substances (AICS) and are therefore considered to be existing chemicals.

These nanomaterials may be introduced into and used in Australia without notification to and assessment by NICNAS.

NICNAS can, however, initiate reviews of existing chemicals (including their nano-forms) when health or environmental concerns are identified. Development of further options for regulating nano-forms of existing chemicals has been deferred until the outcomes of the Review of NICNAS are known.
