Public and Confidential Inventory

Type in a chemical name or CAS number in the search bar below or at the top of the page.

Public Inventory

The Inventory is a searchable database of industrial chemicals that we maintain.

You can search for chemicals but you can't download a complete list of chemicals on the Inventory database.

Tips on searching the Inventory (includes information about searching by a CAS number or a chemical name)

It is a legal requirement to check the Inventory and the first step you should take if you are planning to manufacture and/or import chemicals or a product containing chemicals into Australia .

We define all chemicals on the Inventory as existing industrial chemicals, while we define industrial chemicals not on the Inventory as new industrial chemicals.

The public Inventory lists over 40,000 chemicals which you can search.

Find out what the Inventory will tell you

If the chemical you are intending to import or manufacture is not in the public section, you need to apply to us for a search of the confidential Inventory.

A chemical listed on the Inventory can be imported or manufactured without notifying us provided it meets any relevant conditions. If your chemical falls outside the scope of its stated purpose in the Inventory, you will need to notify us unless an exemption applies.

New chemicals added to the public Inventory

We notify new listings in the Chemical Gazette on the first Tuesday of each month.

Confidential Inventory

What is the confidential Inventory?

The confidential section of the Inventory is not publicly available. Chemicals listed on the confidential Inventory are not searchable on our website.

Importers and manufacturers can request confidential listing to protect their commercial interests. They must apply for this type of listing: strict criteria apply in reviewing the application.

Can I request a search of the confidential Inventory?

Yes. If you cannot locate a chemical on the public Inventory and you are genuinely intending to import and/or manufacture the chemical into Australia you can ask us to search the confidential Inventory for you.

Can I use a chemical that is in the confidential Inventory?

Yes. The same rules apply as for the public section - the chemical is available to import or manufacture provided your purpose meets any relevant conditions of use for the chemical.

How to apply

There is no fee for applying. Ensure you have searched the public Inventory using the recommended search methods.

You can read our guidance on how to apply here. If you have already read the guidance, you can apply in NICNAS Business Services.
