Chemicals used for coal seam gas extraction in Australia

Which chemicals are used in CSG extraction in Australia?

The geological and groundwater conditions at each drilling site determine the processes and chemicals used to extract CSG.

How are CSG chemicals regulated in Australia?

Industrial chemicals, including those associated with CSG extraction, must generally be listed on the chemical inventory (AICS) or notified to NICNAS before being introduced into Australia. Chemicals that are already listed on AICS (without conditions) may be used for any industrial application—including in coal seam gas extraction—without notifying us.

The regulation of CSG and coal mining developments is primarily the responsibility of state and territory governments. The Australian Government only assesses CSG or coal mining proposals which could have a significant impact on water resources and other matters of national environmental significance as defined in the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999.

Go to the Department of the Environment and Energy for more information about CSG and water and for information about CSG research projects.
