Treaties
NICNAS has put in place administrative and legislative measures to ensure that Australia meets its obligations under international agreements.
Australia has ratified the following conventions:
The Rotterdam Convention on the Prior Informed Consent Procedure
for Certain Hazardous Chemicals and Pesticides in International Trade.
Certain hazardous industrial chemicals are subject to national and
international import and export controls. The Stockholm Convention
on Persistent Organic Pollutants: Assessment of new and existing
chemicals with persistent organic pollutant characteristics are subject
to certain data requirements. Other International Treaties Australia participates in other international treaties that promote the safe management of hazardous chemicals. These include the:
Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and their Disposal is implemented in Australia by the Department of the Environment and Heritage under the Hazardous Waste (Regulation of Exports and Imports) Act 1989. Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer: Australia has ratified this treaty and the obligations of the treaty are implmented in Australia by the Department of the Environment and Heritage.
