Harmonisation of Chemical Assessment
International harmonisation needs to be balanced with national needs and concerns. Australia's chemical management approach reflects our unique environment, demography and industries, but also recognises that what might constitute prudent regulatory action in one country may not be appropriate or affordable to others. The benefits of burden sharing and eliminating unnecessary duplication that is achieved through harmonisation activities is well recognised. Direct benefits – including reduced regulatory burden and costs – flow on to industry. Harmonisation of classification and labelling of chemicals Strategies are being developed for a globally harmonised scheme (GHS) for chemical classification and labelling; it will make classification and labelling decisions more transparent.
