NICNAS New Chemicals Reports and Recommendations

For certificate notifications, the draft assessment report on a notifier’s chemical will be sent to the notifier for comment before final publication by NICNAS, except in the case of self-assessment.

The notifier can seek a variation to the report before it is published. The assessment certificate is issued after the report has been finalised.

NICNAS produces three types of new chemical assessment reports:

  • Assessment report – comprised of exempt information plus the full public report, provided to the notifier(s) and agencies involved

  • Full public report – available without restriction and free of charge from NICNAS or this web site. Where applicable, the States and Territories receive copies of full public reports so that they may act on report recommendations

  • Summary Report – published in Chemical Gazette, may also be accessed on this web site under Full public report.

NICNAS also forwards recommendations on regulatory matters, such as exposure standards and hazardous substances, and health effects classification to the Australian Safety and Compensation Council (ASCC) and the National Drugs and Poisons Scheduling Committee (NDPSC).

Any person may apply to NICNAS for a variation of the full public report on a new chemical within 28 days of publication of the Summary Report in the Chemical Gazette.
