Certificate Categories

 

There are three main certificate categories:

• Standard (STD);

• Limited (LTD), and

• Polymers of low concern (PLC).

Certificate applications must contain the relevant mandatory forms for each category.

Standard (STD) and limited (LTD) assessments

Most NICNAS assessment certificates are STDs or LTDs, including all chemicals and polymers that do not qualify as polymers of low concern (PLCs). LTD and STD notification forms and checklists are available online. Most LTD and STD assessment applications are submitted to NICNAS using the electronic template.

LTD assessments are for:

• Chemicals introduced at a rate of up to one tonne per 12-month period;

• Synthetic polymers with NAMW greater than 1000 and which do not meet the PLC criteria (no volume restriction);

• Chemicals restricted to their manufacturing site and manufactured at a rate of not more than 10 tonnes per 12-month period.

STD assessments cover all other certificate assessments except for polymers of low concern.

Polymers of low concern (PLC)

PLCs are polymers that meet low concern criteria for human health and the environment. Further information on PLC criteria is given in Appendix 10 of the NICNAS Handbook for Notifiers. PLC notification forms and checklists are available online, with the self-assessment option very popular for PLC assessments.
