What if the chemical already exists in Australia?

 

If you are using a cosmetic chemical that is one of the more than 38,000 industrial chemicals listed in AICS, you do not need to notify NICNAS. It is legal to import or manufacture the chemical in Australia although other regulations in relation to supply or sale as a cosmetic may apply.

NICNAS assesses these chemicals by priority in response to concerns about their health and environmental effects, and refers to them as priority existing chemicals (PECs). If you import or manufacture a priority existing chemical, you may be required to provide information for the assessment.

The assessment looks at the risks (if any) to workers, members of the public and the environment, associated with the importation, manufacture, use, storage, handling or disposal of any chemical or group of chemicals. The assessment report makes any necessary recommendations for protecting Australians and their environment from risks posed by the chemical.
