Information for the Community
NICNAS recognises the important contribution civil society can make to NICNAS’s effective and efficient operation.
NICNAS’s Community Engagement Forum (CEF) developed the first three items listed below. The Charter guides NICNAS each time it engages with the community.
Members of the public and non-industry based interest groups will find
links to useful NICNAS resources listed below the charter. CEF Bulletin (e-newsletter) Quarterly bulletin prepared by the CEF providing information about industrial chemical issues and their impact on public health, worker safety and the environment. Community Engagement Forum The Community Engagement Forum was established to assist NICNAS address aspects of the community’s right to know, in relation to the control and use of industrial chemicals. It meets twice yearly. More information is provided in the Community Engagement Forum brochure.
Community Engagement Charter The Community Engagement Charter outlines the principles and protocols to be followed by NICNAS in the conduct of its work delivering services to its stakeholders and clients and ensuring that it maximises opportunities for effective engagement about industrial chemicals.

Cosmetics Many ingredients in cosmetic products are classed as industrial chemicals, even those described as naturally occurring. To make sure these products are safe for the workers handling them, the environment and for consumers to use, the Australian Government regulates the ingredients used in the manufacture and importation of cosmetics in Australia. New Chemicals New chemicals are assessed prior to their release based on information supplied by the importer or manufacturer. NICNAS produces an assessment report with recommendations for safe use of the chemical. We then issue a certificate or permit to the importer or manufacturer with conditions to ensure safe use of the new industrial chemical Click here for more information >>
Existing Chemicals Existing chemicals are those industrial chemicals available for use in Australia. They include all the chemicals that are listed on the Australian Inventory of Chemical Substances (AICS).
Due to their large number (over 40,000), NICNAS assesses existing chemicals on a priority basis in response to concerns about their health or environmental effects, or both.
Any person or organisation with a concern about the public health, occupational health and safety, or environmental effects of an industrial chemical may nominate it for assessment as a Priority Existing Chemical.
Recommendations on the safe use of these chemicals are made in the reports. For more information please see assessment reports on Priority Existing Chemicals (PECs).
NICNAS recently conducted a review of the Existing Chemicals Assessment Program. It made a number of recommendations for improving the program, and these are being implemented. Click here for more information >>
