Poisons Scheduling

About the Chemicals
Poisons and medicines scheduling is a national classification system that controls how chemicals and medicines are made available to the public. The scheduling of poisons & medicines was considered by the National Drugs and Poisons Schedule Committee (NDPSC).

A revised legislative framework for the scheduling of chemicals and medicines, including new decision making powers, was implemented on 1 July 2010. Revised administrative arrangements include changes to the structure of the scheduling committee and a new streamlined decision making process.

Taking effect on 1 July 2010, the Scheduling Policy Framework:

  • guides decision-makers within the Department of Health and Ageing, as well as stakeholders interested in scheduling processes
  • sets out the scheduling process, guidance for amending the Poisons Standard, the classification system for medicines and chemicals, as well as guidelines for applications, public consultation and confidential information as these relate to scheduling applications.
