Existing Chemical FAQs What are the requirements for labelling of an industrial chemical? There are a number of labelling schemes in Australia
that may apply to industrial chemicals. The
Australian Code for the
Transport of Dangerous Goods by Road and Rail sets out requirements for
the labelling of dangerous goods being transported in Australia. For
industrial chemicals used in the workplace, most state and territories
have adopted the labelling recommendations set out in the
National
Occupational Health and Safety Commission's National Code of Practice
for the Labelling of Workplace Substances
If a chemical is marketed for domestic/consumer use, the label may need to comply with the recommendations set out in the Standard for the Uniform Scheduling of Drugs and Poisons (SUSDP), issued by the National Drugs and Poisons Schedule Committee.
There is a further labelling scheme for cosmetics. Cosmetics must be labelled according to the Guidelines issued by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), where all ingredients are listed in order of highest to lowest percentage in the product.
