The NICNAS draft Priority Existing Chemical (PEC) assessment report for di(methoxyethyl) phthalate (DMEP) is now available for public comment. Di(methoxyethyl) phthalate (DMEP, CAS No. 117-82-8) is a member of the group of chemicals commonly known as phthalates, used ubiquitously as solvents (which dissolve other substances) and plasticisers (which make other substances more pliable) worldwide. Based on the assessment findings, NICNAS is recommending that DMEP be considered for listing in Appendix C of the Poisons Standard (Standard for the Uniform Scheduling of Medicines and Poisons (SUSMP)) to limit the potential exposure of the public, including young children, to DMEP from possible use in cosmetics. NICNAS also recommends putting in place a requirement for reassessment (i.e. secondary notification under Section 64 of the ICNA Act) if new information becomes available that may impact on the assessment outcomes of DMEP. For more information please refer to the current consultations section on the NICNAS website.
